Invention Convention


The Cayman First Classroom of the Month for June puts the focus on CIS’s Invention Convention. Third graders at Cayman International School are given a problem to solve and tasked with inventing a solution as well as presenting that invention to their peers.  Since our youngsters are being trained for jobs that don’t even exist, the focus on teaching them to use processes and critical thinking skills to problem solve with a dash of public speaking seems like a pretty good bet.

Affordable Residential Development Seeks to Meet Local Market Demands

George Town, Grand Cayman: 19 North Development Company Ltd. (“19 North”), a new affordable for-sale residential development in the Cayman Islands, recently launched its pre-sales initiative to resounding response. Pre-sales opened to the public in December 2018 through a digital-led whisper campaign, and only 20 of the development’s 75 apartments are still available for purchase.

The development’s three apartment blocks are centred around ample outdoor facilities and communal gathering spaces that create a balance of style and purpose; combining high living standards and plentiful amenities with an affordable price point.

Apartments range from 400 to 1,175 square feet and all feature balconies overlooking the property’s gardens and public spaces, high ceilings, modern finishings, and open-plan interior layouts with exceptional functionality. Future residents will also have access to a state-of-the-art gym, 60’ pool and dedicated barbeque area, as well as extensive gardens featuring native trees and shaded pavilions for outdoor recreation and activities.

Curio Collection by Hilton Expands Presence in Caribbean with Signing of Hilton’s First Hotel in the Cayman Islands

Set to open in 2021, the hotel reinforces Hilton’s growth in the Caribbean

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands and MCLEAN, Va. – February 20, 2019Hilton (NYSE: HLT) announces the signing of an agreement for a new Curio Collection by Hilton property in the Cayman Islands with NCB Group. Scheduled to open in 2021, the new-build 80-room hotel will usher in a new era of upper upscale accommodations focusing on sustainability and wellness, incorporating renewable and energy-efficient technologies throughout the property.

“As tourist arrivals in the Caribbean continue to increase, we have prioritized the region in our larger expansion efforts with Hilton’s first property in Grand Cayman,” said Juan Corvinos, vice president, development, Latin America and the Caribbean, Hilton. “In partnership with NCB Group, we are working toward embodying a retreat that caters to the needs of today’s discerning travelers that prioritize wellness while at home and abroad.”

Situated on the edge of George Town, the beachfront hotel boasts 80 suites with spacious floorplans ranging from one to three bedrooms, which will also be available for purchase. Each suite will feature energy-efficient technologies, in-room yoga mats and fitness equipment, and lighting that regulates circadian rhythm. Travelers will also be able to opt for executive and penthouse suites with premier private pools.

Guests will enjoy farm-to-table dining at two of the property’s restaurants and poolside café, offering local seafood, fresh produce, organic wines and craft cocktails. With a fully-equipped gym, rejuvenating spa and conference facilities, the hotel will also provide guests with a refreshing swimming pool complete with a swim-up bar and a fresh juice bar. The hotel will also have electric vehicle rentals and complimentary bicycles for eco-conscious guests to ride along and enjoy Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach.

2018 YCLA Finalist Wilbur Welcome

Wilbur Welcome is a Senior Policy Analyst in the Ministry of Financial Services and is happily married to Shari Welcome. Prior to joining the Ministry Wilbur held the position of Senior Analyst at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Wilbur is originally from Bodden Town, and now resides in the peaceful district of East End and is an active member of the William Pouchie Memorial United Church, in North Side.

He is an Elder and Treasurer of the William Pouchie Memorial United Church; he also serves as the Sunday school superintendent, co-founder and program coordinator of the Anchors Christian Boys Club, member of New Direction Male Choir, and an executive on the Men’s Fellowship of the William Pouchie Memorial United Church.

He is also an alumnus of the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Cayman program. Throughout his life Wilbur has demonstrated strong community spirit, assisting with Vacation Bible School and sports days under the United Church, and participated in national and local club football.

His interests include farming, fishing, travel, sports, photography, the arts, and history. Wilbur holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting with a concentration in Finance from North Carolina State University and earned his MBA at Campbell University.
